From the press release:

KATE BUSH RELEASES HER BRAND NEW SINGLE “DEEPER UNDERSTANDING” ON TUESDAY APRIL 5; THE SINGLE WAS PLAYED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON RADIO 2 THIS MORNING, MONDAY APRIL 4.

KATE’S NEW ALBUM “DIRECTOR’S CUT” IS RELEASED ON MAY 16 AND FEATURES RE-INTERPRETATIONS AND MANY NEWLY RECORDED ELEMENTS OF CLASSIC KATE BUSH SONGS FROM TWO PREVIOUS ALBUMS.

Kate Bush releases her new single, a brand new version of “Deeper Understanding”, on Tuesday April 5. The single is released digitally and had its first play this morning, Monday April 4 on Radio 2. A new short film to accompany the track will be premiered in a few weeks. It’s directed by Kate and stars Robbie Coltrane, Frances Barber and Noel Fielding – and Kate’s son Albert plays the role of the computer programme. He is also featured in the song, singing as the computer programme.

Kate’s new album “Director’s Cut” is released on May 16, the first album to be released on her own label, Fish People, which will be distributed by EMI. The track-listing for the album, which sees her revisit and, in some cases, re-record tracks from two of her classic albums is:

  1. FLOWER OF THE MOUNTAIN (a new version of the song originally titled ‘The Sensual World’)
  2. SONG OF SOLOMON
  3. DEEPER UNDERSTANDING
  4. LILY
  5. THE RED SHOES
  6. THIS WOMAN’S WORK
  7. MOMENTS OF PLEASURE
  8. NEVER BE MINE
  9. TOP OF THE CITY
  10. AND SO IS LOVE
  11. RUBBERBAND GIRL

Kate says: “Originally when I wrote the song ‘The Sensual World’ I had used text from the end of ‘Ulysses’ by James Joyce, put to a piece of music I had written. When I asked for permission to use the text I was refused, which was disappointing. I then wrote my own lyrics for the song although I felt that the original idea had been more interesting.  Well, I’m not James Joyce am I? When I came to work on this project I thought I would ask for permission again and this time they said yes.   It is now re-titled ‘Flower Of the Mountain’ and I am delighted that I have had the chance to fulfill the original concept”.

All the lead vocals and drums on “Director’s Cut” are new performances, some of the tracks featuring guests including Steve Gadd, Danny Thompson and, on backing vocals, Mica Paris.  Three songs have been completely re-recorded, one of which is “This Woman’s Work”.

Kate adds: “For some time I have felt that I wanted to revisit tracks from these two albums and that they could benefit from having new life breathed into them. Lots of work had gone into the two original albums and now these songs have another layer of work woven into their fabric. I think of this as a new album”.

Kate Bush is currently working on her new album of brand new material.

I think I might pass out from all the excitement! I loved the new single and can’t wait for the album. Now I think I need a nice cup of tea and another listen on youtube!

Looking forward to hearing Flower of the Mountain (yes!) when it first came out Kate mentioned about being refused permission to use the text which I thought at the time would have sounded wonderful (mmmm, yes!).

    Music to my ears!

Particularly thrilled that we finally get treated to Kate’s original conception of ‘The Sensual World’, using word’s from Molly Bloom soliloquy in Joyce’s Ulysses. I recall Kate discussing this in an interview at the time when the album was released, and much as I love the album version, it was somewhat maddening to know it was not quite what she’d wanted to release… it would be worth purchasing ‘Directors Cut’ for this alone.

Kate’s voice has matured beautifully – like another great artist, Joni Mitchell, who returned to re-record earlier works on ‘Travelogue’. So also thrilled that she’s decided to re-record vocals for other much loved songs – another cause for celebration!

  8. Can’t wait to hear the new version of Sensual World with the original Molly Bloom text in place. I think it’s a pretty bold move to not only re-record the song, but give it a new name.

Hi, is here anybody interested in having my (Kate´s) vinyl single Rocket Man/Candle in The Wind from 1991 in exchange for the forthcoming Queen 7´´ vinyl Stormtroopers in Stilettos (to be released on April 16 on a Record Store Day)? Please write at dmac@post.cz

I am so enthralled with this news! I don’t know why, but the bit about Bertie being included as the voice of the computer really touched me. Kate has always been about family with her music and it is so wonderful to hear that her love of it is being passed on to him.

Thank you, Kate, for being brave enough to tackle what had to be a monumental challenge of thrilling your fans once more with some of our favorite songs in a new light! I am more than excited about the new direction!

  11. … a true musician at work. How rare to hear real music… I only just realized after listening to the excellent Deeper Understanding ’11 track on YT. Her voice. How she uses it and changes the usage of it during the track… brilliant.

I just finished the great “Under the Ivy” biography where I read the first time that Kate wanted to use the original text of Joyce for The Sensual World. Some people who had heard this version in the demo state said that it sounded wonderful and matches the music perfectly. So it is great to hear that Kate can now fulfill her original vision for the song.

Just heard Deeper Understanding on the radio (sadly faded out). Must get a few more listens to finalize my opinion.

This new track sounded so fresh and new today, absolutely love it! I am now insanely excited about Directors Cut being released..roll on 16 May!! Woo hoo! We have missed you Kate!

  14. Sam

Out of interest what will be on the second disc of the vinyl release?

unless i’m just being stupid i’m it was said its a two disc vinyl release but surely these tracks would fit on one, no?

  15. Lim Wee Ping

OOH, can’t wait to hear . Finally can hear the original concept of the song. Very excited! has a total new look! Can’t wait to listen to the rest especially , it’s my favourite from . Can’t wait to hear how it sounds like! So glad that Kate didn’t stop making music, because I only discover her on 1995, where she stopped making album. Can’t get enough from Kate.

  16. I’ll want this for the original Molly Bloom words – by the way, Leo Bloom is also the name of Gene Wilder’s accountant character in ‘The Producers’, and it was always the ‘Springtime For Hitler’ scene from this that was on my mind in regard to ‘Heads We’re Dancing’!

Did anyone see the house that looks like Hitler on Russell Howard’s Good News show?

  17. I’ve been a fan, admirer and defender of Kate and her music for 30 years. I look forward to buying “Director’s Cut” and to hear the reworking of the songs. Again, I can’t wait!!!

  18. Kellie Noir Richardson

The bit that i love and im excited about the film with NOEL FIELDING! I love him sooooo much, he is amazing.

  19. Having been a devotee, and collector since I was a kid, witnessing Kate blooming through the passing years, evolving into one of the greatest names in music.

Future generations will refer to the wonder of Bush the same way they refer to The Greats-Beethoven, Bach, Delius, to name a few.
