No plans for a DVD of the shows, currently – Mojo Kate interview

Kate Bush on the cover of Mojo January 2017 issueWhile many thousands of people got the chance to see Kate’s Before the Dawn concerts in the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith in 2014, many, many more around the globe simply could not attend. Since it was revealed that the show had been professionally filmed over two nights that September, fans have of course been asking almost daily whether there are plans to make a visual document of the show commercially available on DVD or Blu-ray. Kate herself never officially mentioned or announced plans for a film release at any point. As subscriber copies of Mojo Magazine (which contains a new interview) arrive early this week, we now know what Kate has to say on that subject. In a nutshell: no current plans for a DVD, but she does leave the door open a little for something further down the road.

Mojo: Is there going to be a DVD as well? It was filmed after all…

Kate: It was filmed. And it has been archived. But there are no current plans to bring out a DVD. I think that the CD is, in a way, much more representative of being at the shows than a DVD. When you’re at a live show it’s the whole experience of sitting in an audience, you can scan the stage, choose where to look, it’s completely different from film.

Mojo: Obviously it was such a visual experience, a visual delight, it would be a shame to lose that.

Kate: Well, I dunno, there might be something at some point, but there’s certainly no plans at the moment. I want to very much move on and do something new. I’d like to do something (pregnant pause)… new! (Laughs.)

Mojo: Do you know what yet?

Kate: (Emphatically) No.

The full 11-page interview cover feature in Mojo is out on November 22nd and all details, including how to order the magazine, can be found on the Mojo website here.

As much as i respect Kate i am actually very let down here.I hope she reconsider this
very strange decision.Still look forward to the album though

Have to agree with the disappointment, and I’m among the lucky thousands. I can only hope it is because it didn’t translate well on film overall, and not due to the reported unfortunate technicalities on both nights of official filming (though album liner notes indicate another pre-launch night was filmed.) We know it can’t be the same as being in the audience, of course, but then neither was the original Hammersmith concert video.

I too am very disappointed by this news. I desperately wanted to go to the concert but was foiled when trying to purchase tickets. I consoled myself with the knowledge that a DVD would be forthcoming – the concert was filmed after all.

But I’m not bitter. Kate is on my list of ‘Brilliant People’ and nothing will ever dislodge her from that list. Of course the live CDs are most welcome, but I wanted to see her perform on stage and witness the spectacle that everyone raved about. Guess I’ll just have to wait for the next concert…

  3. Barbara Kirk

I’m disappointed too. I couldn’t go to the concert for money reasons and I feel she’s disappointed a lot of fans outside London. I will read the interview in Mojo and listen to Matt Everitt interviewing her on the BBC I-player, but I feel let down.

  4. Mark

    Extremely sad news.

  5. Bradford Bennett

Very disappointing news, and I really hope she changes her mind. I was lucky enough to see it, but have been anxiously awaiting the DVD ever since. Also, I seem to remember her making a statement that it was going to be released as a concert film, and that was one of the arguments made in not using cell phones at the show.

I can’t help but think this is her being overly self-conscious of her performance and/or appearance.

  6. David bogie

Sad? It’s a disgustingly selfish decision. I can buy the CD set, because I want to complete my collection, and finally say goodbye to Bush.

  7. Alan

Just read the Mojo interview and it’s the worst of the ones I’ve seen so far. Kate doesn’t seem to come across very well in it, and it’s bordering on unfriendly in places. Some of the other interviews are much better. The Independent one is OK:

(Hope the link works – could only find the interview from a Google search)

You know Kate, there is such thing as bootlegs. I already own an (superb quality!) audio recording of the concert (accidentally, the very concert I have attended) since two years. And I KNOW what kind of experience is listening only to the audio portion of that show compared to being able to see what was happening there.
Very strange decision about not releasing the DVD. Something like “because watching the show on video is worse than watching it live, let’s give the fans something even more worse and make them only listening to the audio”. Nonsense logic.
Kate, you are a genius artist (and there is NO other artist I describe by the word “genius”, so it’s a big word for me), but by this decision you are just disrespectful to your fans.

  9. Lydia

I agree I am a great fan of all Kates music, and yet I feel very let down she refuses to release the DVD of the visuals and only to release the CD of the music. (I have all her albums so do not need to buy another CD with re-hashed songs from all of her albums.) I too could not get a ticket for Hammersmith at the time. Kate knows a live concert is a live concert or a live concept. It does appear she is putting her consciousness ahead of thinking of duty as a muso to share it with all her fans.

It does make me think differently of her as a performer, she sells visuals..her shows were visual that is why to share the visual is very important
