Happy 80th Birthday to John Carder Bush!

Wishing our inspiring and brilliant friend, the poet, writer and photographer (and of course Kate’s eldest brother) John Carder Bush, an exquisitely wonderful day today as he celebrates his 80th birthday! John, you never cease to astound us with your brilliance, endless creativity, wit and warmth. Your writing is a constant gift. As his little sister Kate once wrote, “Growing up with a writer and poet in the family is a wonderful thing…whenever I read John’s work I can hear his voice, like that of a great actor, and the strum of his acoustic guitar as he speaks.”

You can celebrate John today by listening to our extensive two-part Kate Bush Fan Podcast episode (links: Part One / Part Two), where Seán met up with John at his home in London and discussed John’s early life, how he developed his writing, his days playing in folk bands in London (with a young Kate taking notes), forming the Salatticum Poets with his great friends Tony Buzan and Jeremy Cartland, the story behind “Nicholas Wade” of the Kate Bush Club fame, his involvement in Kate’s career, the 1979 tour, his famous video set and album/single cover photographs, the poetry books, novels and photo books he has published, his collaborations with Vivienne Chandler, his involvement in the Japanese martial art of Kyudo, the re-grouping of the Salatticum Poets in the 21st century, his return to the Jig of Life narration for Before the Dawn – and a lot more! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN! – Seán, Krys, Peter and Dave xxx

New Podcast: John Carder Bush interview – Part Two!

Another very special Kate Bush Fan Podcast! In the second part of Seán’s conversation with Kate’s brother, John Carder Bush, he talks about his involvement in Kate’s career, the 1979 tour, his famous video set and album/single cover photographs, the poetry books, novels and photo books he has published, his collaborations with Vivienne Chandler, his involvement in the Japanese martial art of Kyudo, the re-grouping of the Salatticum Poets in the 21st century, his return to the Jig of Life narration for Before the Dawn – and a lot more! John Carder Bush: HomeGround 40th Anniversary Issue Highlights

John Carder Bush in HomeGround’s 40th Anniversary Issue

To celebrate HomeGround Magazine‘s 40th anniversary issue which has just been published, Kate’s brother, John Carder Bush, has contributed something very special indeed. He is offering readers access to his special site which offers a wonderful collection of videoed recitations of his favourite poems: Poems, Hats and a Beard. You can visit the site here and use the login HOMEGROUND with password FORTY.

Many, many years ago, I used to give live poetry readings with my two poet friends, Tony Buzan and Jeremy Cartland as the Salatticum Poets, and in more recent years, I used to entertain them both with recitations of my favourite poems when we met for dinner. Because both of them have now moved on to the Great Poetry Reading in the Sky, I decided I would carry on reciting, but to a wider audience.

Kate: Inside the Rainbow – first brief impression

KATE_Front_Cover-1024x768

I have just spent the last few hours in the company of a complete treasure trove of a book; Kate: Inside the Rainbow by John Carder Bush. “Treasure” is a good word here, I think the shimmer and glow of what’s unearthed here enhances and even changes how I think about some of the work that Kate has produced, so utterly associated as is it is with the visuals over the decades.

It’s also a supremely loving tribute to the entire extended Bush family, with an unexpected and sensitive biography of Kate thrown into the bargain. I learnt a LOT of new things. Every aspect of it – the tasteful modern design and layout, the brilliantly chosen visual surprises, the feel of the (sizeable!) tome in the hand, means that John has achieved what amounts to THE most relevant, important and visually sumptuous printed publication on Kate Bush to date. Of course he has. ~ Seán

(with thanks to Kirsteen Astor and congratulations to John on his superb book)

BBC Radio 6Music to air 3 hour Kate Bush special featuring John Carder Bush

BBC 6MusicOn Sunday 24th August, BBC Radio 6Music in the UK will broadcast a 3 hour special programme about Kate, presented by Mary Anne Hobbs, starting at 7am GMT. It will feature a chat with Kate’s brother, John Carder Bush. You can listen live here. From the website:

“A Kate Bush special show, featuring Kate songs, Kate covers, Kate fan Jessie Ware as a guest on the show, and Kate’s brother John also in conversation. What is she really like? What makes her so special? We immerse ourselves in all things Bush, ahead of Kate’s long, long-awaited comback shows at the Hammersmith Apollo.

John Carder BushOur first guest John Carder Bush is a poet and photographer. He is also Kate Bush’s older brother, and can be heard singing on several of her tracks, including Army Dreamers and Jig Of Life. In 1986 he published a fantastic book of photos (‘Cathy’) of Kate as an enigmatic eight year old girl. His pictures hint at the unusual magic to come from this global musical hero. John describes his sister as his “companionable little friend” possessed of “quiet, unobtrusive intelligence.” Our second guest Jessie Ware is a huge Kate Bush fan. Jessie is also often compared to her hero in reviews. Her first album Devotion was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2012. Her second album Tough Love is released in October. She has also collaborated with SBTRKT, Sampha and Disclosure.”

Calvin Klein designer acquires a copy of “Cathy” by John Carder Bush

The second “Cathy” related post in as many weeks, this one is an article I missed from 2012 in the Wall Street Journal about how delighted Italo Zucchelli, menswear designer for Calvin Klein Collection, was to pick up a rare copy of the book for over $1,000 recently! (thanks to Gabi for sharing)

“When I saw it, I screamed,” says Mr. Zucchelli, who owns all of Ms. Bush’s albums. “I bought it immediately. I had to have that book.” Since then, the book, “Cathy” by John Carder Bush, has occupied a prominent spot on the bookshelf in his Manhattan apartment, “where I can see it.”

Read the full article at the Wall Street Journal site here. Seán says: This makes me extra grateful again for the signed copy of the book that John sent me a few years back – cheers John! Check out John’s official site here to purchase his beautifully bound novel “The Cellar Gang“.

Feature on ‘Cathy’ by John Carder Bush in AnOther Magazine

The fashion and photography magazine, AnOther, has recently published an article on the (long out of print) 1986 photography book ‘Cathy’ by Kate’s brother John Carder Bush. It describes the book:

…a book of photographs of an eight-year-old Kate Bush, taken by her older brother John Carder Bush and published in 1986. Here we present an extract from Carder Bush’s lyrical introduction, alongside a gallery of images featuring a blunt fringed Cathy cavorting around in costumes and oversized hats, lost in a world of her own imagination.

You can read the article here and visit John’s official site here, where copies of his brilliant novel “The Cellar Gang” can be ordered.

And I’ll always cherish it! Have you got your copy of  John’s brilliant novel ‘The Cellar Gang‘ yet? If not, you’re seriously missing out…more on how to order his must-have book here.
