Kate: Inside the Rainbow – first brief impression

KATE_Front_Cover-1024x768

I have just spent the last few hours in the company of a complete treasure trove of a book; Kate: Inside the Rainbow by John Carder Bush. “Treasure” is a good word here, I think the shimmer and glow of what’s unearthed here enhances and even changes how I think about some of the work that Kate has produced, so utterly associated as is it is with the visuals over the decades.

It’s also a supremely loving tribute to the entire extended Bush family, with an unexpected and sensitive biography of Kate thrown into the bargain. I learnt a LOT of new things. Every aspect of it – the tasteful modern design and layout, the brilliantly chosen visual surprises, the feel of the (sizeable!) tome in the hand, means that John has achieved what amounts to THE most relevant, important and visually sumptuous printed publication on Kate Bush to date. Of course he has. ~ Seán

(with thanks to Kirsteen Astor and congratulations to John on his superb book)

BBC Radio 6Music to air 3 hour Kate Bush special featuring John Carder Bush

BBC 6MusicOn Sunday 24th August, BBC Radio 6Music in the UK will broadcast a 3 hour special programme about Kate, presented by Mary Anne Hobbs, starting at 7am GMT. It will feature a chat with Kate’s brother, John Carder Bush. You can listen live here. From the website:

“A Kate Bush special show, featuring Kate songs, Kate covers, Kate fan Jessie Ware as a guest on the show, and Kate’s brother John also in conversation. What is she really like? What makes her so special? We immerse ourselves in all things Bush, ahead of Kate’s long, long-awaited comback shows at the Hammersmith Apollo.

John Carder BushOur first guest John Carder Bush is a poet and photographer. He is also Kate Bush’s older brother, and can be heard singing on several of her tracks, including Army Dreamers and Jig Of Life. In 1986 he published a fantastic book of photos (‘Cathy’) of Kate as an enigmatic eight year old girl. His pictures hint at the unusual magic to come from this global musical hero. John describes his sister as his “companionable little friend” possessed of “quiet, unobtrusive intelligence.” Our second guest Jessie Ware is a huge Kate Bush fan. Jessie is also often compared to her hero in reviews. Her first album Devotion was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2012. Her second album Tough Love is released in October. She has also collaborated with SBTRKT, Sampha and Disclosure.”

Calvin Klein designer acquires a copy of “Cathy” by John Carder Bush

The second “Cathy” related post in as many weeks, this one is an article I missed from 2012 in the Wall Street Journal about how delighted Italo Zucchelli, menswear designer for Calvin Klein Collection, was to pick up a rare copy of the book for over $1,000 recently! (thanks to Gabi for sharing)

“When I saw it, I screamed,” says Mr. Zucchelli, who owns all of Ms. Bush’s albums. “I bought it immediately. I had to have that book.” Since then, the book, “Cathy” by John Carder Bush, has occupied a prominent spot on the bookshelf in his Manhattan apartment, “where I can see it.”

Read the full article at the Wall Street Journal site here. Seán says: This makes me extra grateful again for the signed copy of the book that John sent me a few years back – cheers John! Check out John’s official site here to purchase his beautifully bound novel “The Cellar Gang“.

Feature on ‘Cathy’ by John Carder Bush in AnOther Magazine

The fashion and photography magazine, AnOther, has recently published an article on the (long out of print) 1986 photography book ‘Cathy’ by Kate’s brother John Carder Bush. It describes the book:

…a book of photographs of an eight-year-old Kate Bush, taken by her older brother John Carder Bush and published in 1986. Here we present an extract from Carder Bush’s lyrical introduction, alongside a gallery of images featuring a blunt fringed Cathy cavorting around in costumes and oversized hats, lost in a world of her own imagination.

You can read the article here and visit John’s official site here, where copies of his brilliant novel “The Cellar Gang” can be ordered.

Kate by John Carder Bush

The supremely talented poet, author and photographer John Carder Bush writes about photographing his sister Kate all the way from her childhood right through to her most recent album release in The Independent here.  The site features photographs from John’s almost-impossible-to-find  book ‘Cathy’, published in the 1980s, which he sent to me (Seán) a few years ago completely out of the blue. And I’ll always cherish it! Have you got your copy of  John’s brilliant novel ‘The Cellar Gang‘ yet? If not, you’re seriously missing out…more on how to order his must-have book here. (with thanks to Louise) If you’re wondering what Kate’s other exceptionally talented brother, Paddy Bush , has been up to, check out my recent report on his wonderful exhibition in Co. Cavan, Ireland, here.

BBC Documentary – view clips and vote at BBC site

The BBC site has been updated with interview clips (including Del Palmer, John Carder Bush, Peter Gabriel, John Lydon, Anthony Van Laast and Mark Radcliffe all talking about Kate) from Wednesday night’s upcoming documentary “Queens of British Pop” here. And in conjunction with this two-part programme, the BBC are asking site visitors to vote on “your favourite Queen of British Pop” – read more here.

John Carder Bush – his website and new book launched today

As you know, Kate has two exceptionally talented brothers with whom she has collaborated throughout her career (latest word from Paddy below, more from Pad in HomeGround 77 the issue after the upcoming Aerial issue). Kate’s brother John Carder Bush has today published a darkly humorous novel, The Cellar Gang. We’ve been looking forward to this for quite some time. You can order the book and read all about John’s forthcoming written, musical and spoken-word works at his newly launched website www.johncarderbush.com. The book is available in a special limited edition of only 500 copies, the first fifty of which are signed and numbered by the author. Hardback and beautifully bound in linen, The Cellar Gang is printed on thick cream wove paper and comes with a ribbon marker – careful design which will come as no surprise to anyone lucky enough to own a copy of John’s previous publication Cathy. John says: “The Cellar Gang is available from today. I’m very pleased with the book itself – it feels good to hold, looks wonderful and I hope it will nibble its way into your hearts. Many thanks for all your interest in this project.” You can take a look at a large cover shot of the book here. As always with these very special items, and particularly in the run up to Christmas, the advice is – get your order in fast!

HomeGround 74 features exclusive interview with John Carder Bush

John Carder BushHomeGround 74The new issue of HomeGround yet again has a unique contribution from a member of Kate’s family. Krys says “The highlight of this issue is an exclusive 7-page interview with John Carder Bush, Kate’s brother, that he & I did in June & July. It is absolutely wonderful & a must for all Kate fans. This issue has something of a Cathy theme, as you will see, and we think it is something quite special. We also have a wonderful article by Colin Lloyd Tucker about his new album Fear of Flying and the influences behind it. He takes us on a dreamy, atmospheric step into the past, to the places where his music came from. Colin sent me the demo some time ago, and the finished CD arrived recently. I have played it to death ever since! Details for ordering are at http://www.colinlloydtucker.com. There’s a great article by writer and poet Collin Kelley on the late artist Edward Gorey, and we have several poems by Collin too. Keeping with the Cathy theme, Thom Penman has written a beautiful Cathy-inspired story, especially illustrated by Debi. And there is an interesting look at Kate’s early demos by Andrew Marvick. Mix all this together with a pinch of the Gothic and some amazing pieces of artwork by Debi and Neil.” The issue is being sent out Saturday 24th July & it should be with UK subscribers around Tuesday 27th. You can order a subscription and back issues by PayPal here. Krys adds: “The interview really is something very special. I’ve asked John about the Cathy book, his photography, the KT Bush Band, his poetry, his influences, inspirations & heaps of other stuff.”
