Boolbar writes: “Last night on BBC1 just before the News At 10, they had a few minutes to spare in the schedule so they stuck a 5 minute program about the Top Of The Pops albums that used to be around in the 70s (older UK people should remember those leggy models that adorned each cover). They mentioned that all the tracks on these albums were recorded with session musicians and showed a clip from the Wuthering Heights video followed by someone saying how completely unlike Kate the TOTP album version of Wuthering Heights was. They played a bit of the TOTP version saying that it sounds more like Olive Oyl from Popeye.” (thanks Boolbar)

Kate - no reason, just liked the piccy ;-) The recent issue of “Stereo“, one of the leading German magazines that deals with testing audio equipment and reviewing music, comes with an extra booklet called “Stereo CD Guide: 100 Audiophile Pop, Jazz and Classic CDs” and features Kate’s The Whole Story, “…this compilation of Kate Bush’s most important hits and tracks is impressive because of great variety and musical quality. And its sound quality is smashing too…”. (thanks to Michael Leitz)…Kate was voted No. 45 in the 100 Best Voices Of The Century by BBC Radio2 in a programme presented by Paul Gambicini over Easter. The video has been out of print in Europe for a long time. It features Kate’s 1987 live performance of Running Up That Hill with David Gilmour on guitar. (thanks to Michael Leitz)….fan reaction to Channel 4’s “Pop Princesses” programme (see April 10th news) has been largely unfavourable. Kate was listed at number 4 in the Top Ten chart and comments about her veered wildly from “weird white witch” and “jug-eared” (!) to “the one great English female singer-songwriter”. You can download a clip here. Also, as a result of the show, the UK magazine What’s On TV had an article “Where Did Kate Go?”. You can see a scan of the article by Chris Twomey (no relation/connection to me) here….John Lang sends a link to a CD by the late guitarist Alan Murphy here.

Music Of The Millennium Poll – Kate Rides High

Music Of The Millennium was a poll conducted throughout the UK & Ireland in association with Channel 4, HMV and Classic FM, and tonights live TV broadcast was the climax to “the biggest and most comprehensive survey on popular music ever undertaken”. Over the past 12 months, the public has taken part by calling special phone lines, visiting the Channel 4 and Classic FM websites and by filling out voting forms in HMV stores, being asked to make crucial decisions about the best music ever made across ten categories; Best Band Of All Time, Best Album, Best Female Singer, Best Male Singer, Best Song, Best Songwriter, Most Influential Musician Of The Millennium, Best Jazz Musician, Best Piece of Classical Music, Best Classical Composer. The poll revealed the results after over 600,000(!) votes had been counted.

In the Best Female Singer category Kate shot into the top ten of the millennium at Number 9. Other top ten females included Ella Fitzgerald, Alanis Morrisette, Aretha Franklin and Bjork. Madonna topped the female singer poll.

Kate’s influence was also felt in other categories; Best Album (Hounds Of Love – Number 47), Best Song (Wuthering Heights – Number 84), Best Songwriter (Number 66), and she was placed Number 61 in the Most Influential Musician Of The Millennium category. Wuthering Heights features on the tie-in double CD release. Read the complete poll results at the Music Of The Millennium web-site.

A Fast Forward Through The Life Of Greg, A Kate Bush Fan

BBC Radio 4 last week broadcast a short comic radio play entitled “A Fast Forward Through The Life Of Greg, A Kate Bush Fan”, seemingly about a fan writing letters to Kate. It’s a fictional account, but that didn’t stop one Press Association reporter contacting the editors of Homeground magazine to locate “Greg”!

Kate’s new album……rumours and confusion!

I’ve just learned that the BBC Radio 2 programme “Inside Track” has spoken with Kate’s representative regarding the current slew of rumours surrounding a new album (see elsewhere on these pages). Here’s a quote from the host Paul Gambicini [You can download what Paul had to say as a .wav file (491k)]:

“Is Kate Bush recording a new album? We have spoken to her P.A. and the good news is there will be something…..sometime. The bad news is it won’t be in the immediate future. Work is still at the “ideas” stage of recording. If you’re a website browser and have come across stories about certain musicians like Dave Gilmour being involved, we have it from the most reliable source of all that these stories are completely unfounded and mere speculation…In the meantime Brown Star Records in America are releasing a tribute album by various indie artists called ‘I WANNA BE KATE: The Songs Of Kate Bush”. They started taking mail orders this week, it will be available at retail around late August/early September. Now I know the answer to that question is probably more than a little frustrating, so I’m going to leave you with one of her hit singles….”

(Paul Gambicini: “Inside Track” Thursday June 25th 1998)

Although this definitely puts an end to any 1998 release hopes (and EMI haven’t had anything to say on the matter) at least it isan official update from Kate’s spokesperson. Kate traditionally reveals little of anything regarding her work while she’s busy recording, and the long gap since The Red Shoes in 1993 has seemingly created much rumour….and begs the question as to the accuracy of some of the reports of the last couple of years from various sources! For my part with this website, earlier this year I’ve had to remove a couple of news items which I’ve learned to be completely false…deliberate misinformation, which does no-one any favours. As always the considered scepticism of the Homeground magazine editorial team has proved correct.

I’ve always stated the sources of my information and am here merely to share any news of interest to the community of fans and music-lovers who value Kate’s work. 1998 continues to be a year of celebration of Kate’s incredible past body of work…

Best wishes and good luck to Kate! (thanks to John Lang for this news and for the audio clip).
