Kate & Rolf Harris – first excerpt of duet online

A sound clip featuring about 60 seconds from “She Moved Through the Fair”, the duet that Kate (relatively) recently recorded with Rolf Harris, has surfaced on Youtube here. It is unclear at the moment whether the clip has been uploaded by someone associated with Rolf or whether Rolf himself played the clip at a recent UK radio appearance. The 80 year old Australian artist and musician has frequently mentioned the duet in interviews and has been anxious to see it released. Featuring Rolf’s trademark didjeridu along with swirling Irish whistles and a soaring vocal from Kate, this has certainly got us excited to hear the full version of this up-tempo treat. This then, the first time we’ve heard Kate singing new material since Lyra in 2007, nearly three years ago.

Update: At the request of Rolf’s publisher, we have removed the audio from the clip that was posted on Youtube, it appears to have been an unauthorised leak. The publishers will update us on plans to release the song when that has been decided.

Theo Bleckmann sings Kate

The New York Times reviews Theo’s new show of extraordinary Kate covers here: “Kate Bush is a special fit for him. The arc of her career, uneasily abutting art-rock and alternative music, jibes with his own off-kilter profile. And she’s another transfixing singer with a penchant for careful diction and spooky connotation, and deep interest in the subconscious. “Hello Earth! The Music of Kate Bush,” Mr. Bleckmann’s new project, had its premiere this spring; he plans to record an album next year.”

Beck Siàn – Ethereal EP – Her first recording

Beck at haunted Plas Teg by Krys

There are only 50 copies remaining of Beck Siàn’s very first release – the Ethereal EP.

Ethereal was recorded whilst Beck was living on the edge of a sub-tropical rainforest in Australia. It is her first ever recording of her own material, and was the beginning of her current musical journey. The EP features Beck’s songs Ethereal and Dream Beneath Trees (Ethereal Pt. 2) – both appeared as bonus tracks on the Unfurling CD. The EP also features Beck’s spine-tingling version of Danny Boy. This is the only chance you will have to own a copy of this track. This really is a magical, atmospheric EP. Beck’s father, David Robson, plays bullroarer and windchimes, and her good friend Stax contributes some awesome didgeridoo-playing.

There are only 50 copies of Ethereal remaining, and once they’re gone, that’s it – it’s deleted. As a special offer, Beck will sign these last 50 copies. You can purchase a copy now using the PayPal button HERE … don’t miss out…

Beck Siàn was born in Melbourne, Australia. Her mother is Welsh, and her father was born in England, but is from an Irish family. A cousin of Kate, it was her influence and artistic inspiration (as well as having a talented artist for a father) that sparked Beck’s own desire to dance, sing and create. Beck’s original music is heavily influenced by the natural environment surrounding her. Her first album, Unfurling, was set within an Australian Rain-forest. Her second full-length CD, Luminous Wings & Unseen Things is set within the formal gardens of a haunted Welsh Castle.

Morris Pert 1947-2010

Some sad news. The Scottish musician, Morris Pert, was found dead at his home in Balchrick on Tuesday, aged 62. He had worked with Kate on some of her most famous recordings, including percussion on the songs Strange Phenomena, Kite, Wuthering Heights, Breathing and The Big Sky; Boo Bams on the song Room For the Life and timpani on the song All We Ever Look For. On Kate’s 1977 recording of Wuthering Heights he played crotals, similar to disc-shaped glockenspiels. His studio session work included recordings with Paul McCartney, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, John Williams, Mike Oldfield, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. Morris was described as a shy, retiring man who lived quietly in his chalet near Kinlochbervie. In 1977 America’s Billboard magazine voted him the fourth best jazz and rock percussionist in the world, and the famous drummer Buddy Rich said he was one of the greatest drummers he had ever played with. He produced five CDs and wrote three major symphonies and featured on many BBC radio programmes. In recent years he was seen contributing to the Kate Bush: Under Review DVD documentary (you can see Morris talking about the Kick Inside sessions towards the end of this clip here.) We wish to send our sincere condolences to his loved ones. Read more about Morris and his work at his website here

Kate salutes the career of Peter Gabriel in new Mojo Magazine

Older news I missed, sorry! Kate pays tribute to her friend Peter Gabriel in the April edition of MOJO magazine. “The art-rock guru looks back on his astonishing 40-year career. From fronting progressive masters Genesis to solo pop success, his is a story of restless toil and adventure. With a new album set for release in March, Gabriel guides us through a unique life in music. PLUS! Kate Bush, Elbow and Vampire Weekend salute the legend!”

I have huge amounts of respect for Peter and his work. He is one of the rare artists who is instantly recognisable through his music, with his stunning voice and his individual style of writing and arranging. ‘Ah yes, I know who that is, that’s Peter!’ He is a great humanitarian and is involved in so many projects outside of music, which is also part of why he’s so interesting. Always delightful to work with, a really lovely person who knows exactly what he wants, it’s fun just being with him. I think the most intriguing thing about him is his transformation when he is on-stage. Off-stage, on more than one occasion, I have seen Peter walk across a room where lines of invisible trip wires have mysteriously appeared across the floor. Perhaps it’s just a cup of coffee or a pile of magazines that have flown across the carpet, with Peter looking slightly bewildered as to why all this stuff has taken off around him. This is part of his charm and I think it’s adorable. He then steps onto a stage and becomes an alarmingly powerful, confident, sexy and enormously charismatic performer. Playful, brave and absolutely fascinating. I really love Peter, he’s one of my favourite human beings.

Mojo’s writers voted on a Peter Gabriel Top Ten songs and present them on the Mojo site here. Kate features on two of the tracks selected, no prizes for guessing they are Games Without Frontiers and Don’t Give Up. “Now imbued with a strange post-Glasnost nostalgia, Games Without Frontiers sounds especially melancholy, Gabriel’s sinister child-catcher delivery and Kate Bush’s eerie “jeux sans frontières” all underscored by that heartbreaking River Kwai whistling” Mojo on Don’t Give Up: “Modernized folk ballad inherits crazy jazz chords, fretless bass and Fairlight, becomes ’80s high-concept pop fantasia. Peter’s a proud working man facing economic catastrophe, the voice cracking as shame and anguish crash over him (how relevant isthis?); Kate Bush is unbowed wifey, injecting hope with every tremor one of the most poignant vocal performances in pop history. If Sting had done this… oh, it doesn’t bear thinking about.” If you haven’t got your hands on a copy of the magazine yet, there’s a taster feature here which streams Gabriel’s new album. Liz Fraser is on the cover of the free cover CD by the way, and Midlake and Rufus Wainwright are featured. Yeah, I’ll be getting this 🙂

Two recent Kate-inspired artworks

The first painting below is a caricature of Kate by the French artist Serge Birault, more at his blog here, see the full size painting here. The second painting is by Irish artist Trevor J Brown, based on Kate’s song “Nocturn” from the Aerial album. You can see more of Trevor’s work at his site here.

Rolf Harris records ‘She Moves Through The Fair’ with Kate

Rolf Harris is still hoping to release She Moves Through the Fair, his 2009 recording with Kate & “the best thing I’ve ever done” says Rolf in a recent radio interview – watch this space. Rolf has previously worked with Kate on The Dreaming and Aerial. Rolf has also been working with Dizzee Rascal and possibly The Chemical Brothers also.

Kate very recently in studio recording with Danny Thompson

This morning BBC Radio Scotland broadcast an interview with double bass player and Pentangle founder member Danny Thompson about his friendship with John Martyn, who passed away last year. During the chat Danny discusses his current projects, including “Recording – how about this – with Kate Bush, a week ago. What a lovely lady she is. She’s so fantastic. Stunning.” Danny has previously played on The Dreaming and Hounds of Love albums. We obviously don’t know if this is work on Kate’s next album, but welcome news nonetheless. (with thanks to Al Lehgori on our forum). Hear the interview here (Kate mentioned at 8m 30s) Apart from working with Kate, Danny is a very busy man, including working with Anne Marie Almedal (who sung The Man With The Child In His Eyes with her band Velvet Belly). Read more about Danny at his Myspace page here.

Lost Kate Vocal Performance surfaces on iTunes!

So this fascinating piece of news has completely caught me napping! For some time it’s been known that songwriter Lionel Azulay (the drummer with ‘Company’, the original band that was later to become the KT Bush Band) was gearing up to release an album of his original work. In the early 1970s Company comprised of Lionel, Del Palmer and Brian Bath and were also occasionally joined live on mandolin by Paddy Bush. Unfortunately, at that time in the 1970s Lionel had a serious road accident and was forced to leave the band, being replaced as drummer by Charlie Morgan, thus missing his chance to play live with Kate. His Myspace page has recently reported that a song called “Wouldn’t Change a Thing” was recorded with Kate on prominent backing vocals but has remained unreleased untill very recently! The song is featured on the new CD “Out of the Ashes”. It was recorded in the 1990s. Lionel says on his site: “The now legendary and hugely all round nice person Kate Bush kindly lent her unique and wonderful voice to one of my songs (Wouldn’t Change a Thing, engineered and produced by Del at The Farm, Welling).” Luckily permission to include this song has been cleared in time for the album release. And we get to hear some previously unheard Kate!

The full song can be heard at Lionel’s Myspace page here. The album is now available to download on iTunes. Special thanks to Dale Stallins at the Kate Bush Tribute page for the care and attention he’s been giving to spreading the Myspace word on Lionel, Del Palmer, Brian Bath and more…outstanding work Dale 🙂

Viva City Release their new single, and it’s called…’Kate Bush’

From the press release: “Hotly tipped electro-indie four-piece VIVA CITY are releasing ‘Kate Bush‘ – their first UK single, on Monday 23 June, on iTunes for digital download. Mixing dark throbbing baselines with melodic electronica, the Newcastle tunesmiths create a unique sound that leaves fans demanding more. The new single is getting great feedback after airing on BBC 6 Music, with renowned musician and BBC DJ Tom Robinson’s ringing endorsement: “Viva City’s ‘Kate Bush’ is a storming two minute slice of leery swaggering electropop. Sheer genius.” The UK single follows a collaboration with Dutch DJ maestro Don Diablo, who released a remix of Viva City’s track ‘Audio Endlessly’ in Europe in February. Don Diablo commented that Viva City are creating “a new sound for a new era”. Produced by the legendary Kosheen DJs, Viva City’s first UK single marks the band’s official launch. Viva City’s Bruce Tate said: “The track is about old and new, appreciating what has come before, whilst also creating a sound of the future. We want people to sit up and listen – the dirty sirens at the start signal the mayhem kicking off and us launching ourselves onto the music scene.” Hear the single at the Viva City myspace page here.

Chris from the band has posted the lyrics of the song on our forum: “Kate Bush, Keep your little hounds of love Kate, Your shoes are in the $$%!#%! lake, and how am I going to get home today? Yeah, in action how like an angel, In apprehension how like a God, You’re the greatest beauty of the world, la la la la {CHORUS} Thus, Bad begins, And I’m letting it in, To fear love is to fear life, To fear love is to fear life, In all truth I attend to their sugared words, I attend to the things absurd, I never was to deter, So take a bow, I dote on her every absence, I cherish every spoken word, I idolise the treasured girls, la la la la, {CHORUS} Thus, Bad begins, And I’m letting it in, To fear love is to fear life, To fear love is to fear life..”

Utah Saints – Something Good, again…

Dance act Utah Saints are back again with a hugely popular 2008 remix of their smash 1992 UK #4 hit ‘Something Good’ (which samples Kate’s Cloudbusting) and all signs are that it is taking the dancefloors of Europe by storm. The great (we love it) new video can be seen on Youtube here. Here’s the blurb for the single from the band: “Utah Saints’ ‘Something Good 08’ (Van She Tech Remix) is the biggest dance record of 2008 so far… Already receiving heavy daytime plays on Radio 1 from the likes of Jo Whiley, Annie Mac, Chris Moyles, Scott Mills, and more, it’s also been a staple for the likes of Zane Lowe and Pete Tong, who’ve made it a Hottest Record In The World and Essential New Tune respectively. Displaying the crossover traits that made the Utah Saints such a formidable force, ‘Something Good 08’, is also picking up huge support at stations ranging from Kiss to XFM, and ILRs across the land. A former No.1 in both the Cool Cuts and Buzz Charts, this release is set to send everyone’s favourite dance band rocketing back to the top of the UK singles charts.”

Placebo Release Running Up That Hill Single In US

Placebo are releasing their cover version of Kate’s Running Up That Hill in the US to coincide with the release of their iTunes only ‘Covers’ album. The track has been described as a “slowed down version of Kate Bush’s unbelievably beautiful classic…taking an already gorgeous song and covering it in a way that makes you fall in love with it again”. There was huge digital download demand for their cover of Kate’s song after it recently appeared in The O.C. Placebo are recruiting fans to star in the forthcoming video for the song. Placebo fans have been submitting single-camera video clips of themselves singing the cover. From an UnderGroundOnline interview with Placebo’s bass guitarist, Stefan Olsdal: UGO: What made you guys want to cover Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill?” Stefan: We cover songs that we like. For us it is something that we do for fun in B-side sessions. We’ve covered a variety of bands, usually from the ’80s. We did a Depeche Mode cover and Robert Palmer even. We’re fans of Kate Bush so, when it came to this track, we thought that the lyrics had a real depth and you can’t really get that in the original because she’s singing it so fast. We wanted to slow it down and it felt really good, and we’re really proud of it. UGO: Have you heard whether or not she likes it? Stefan: Yes we did, actually. We met and she does like it and we’re relieved by that fact because we’re big fans. Full interview here . According to this site “when the band’s singer Brian Molko saw Kate at a party, he approached her to see if she was O.K. with their version of the song. Lucky for them, she loved it.” You can hear the track on the Placebo Myspace page or see a live version on Youtube
