Listen Again to Kate’s BBC Radio 4 interview!

Fantastic, heartwarming experience listening to Kate chatting to John Wilson on BBC Radio 4 this evening! It featured a very happy sounding (and very busy!) Kate, at her home, in the midst of recording sessions for her tenth studio album, plus some truly stirring tasters from Director’s Cut. If you missed it, or want to hear it again then here you go. Makes us very excited for not one, but two upcoming Kate Bush records! (with thanks to Hammer Horror on on our forum for the MP3)

Director’s Cut: a much-needed re-cap!

Director's Cut - Kate Bush - 2011

Here at katebushnews.com the excitement is palpable. Ever since we first noticed some mysterious changes to Kate’s official site on the afternoon of the 11th of March it’s been non-stop. We’ve had the album announcement, the first clip of Deeper Understanding and brilliant new images of Kate, the single premiere on April 4th, some first looks at the fascinating album packages, a brace of early enthusiastic album reviews (including my own) the momentous video premiere which had everybody talking (not least a spooky floating pair of lips!) and quite a few more interviews than maybe might have been expected, including the must-have MOJO cover feature which is in the shops now. Thanks for all the support and feedback, we’ve never experienced this volume of visitors before, which makes it all the more exciting. And here was me thinking Noel Fielding prancing about in a a red dress for Comic Relief was going to be the news highlight of the year! (It was pretty phenomenal though, Noel). So, here’s our attempt to quickly summarise what’s going to happen next, to the best of our current knowledge. Coming up:

  • Tomorrow evening, Wednesday May 4th, at 7.15pm UK time, John Wilson interviews Kate at her home for the BBC Radio 4 Front Row programme.
  • Then, this coming Friday 6th May, Sinead Gleeson’s interview with Kate in The Irish Times is published.
  • Monday 9th May sees Kate chatting to Ken Bruce on his BBC Radio 2 show from 9.30am.
  • Friday 13th May sees Director’s Cut released in Ireland and some other European territories (this follows a similar Friday release pattern in those places for Aerial in 2005)
  • Monday 16th May is the official UK release date of Director’s Cut on Kate’s new Fish People label in conjunction with EMI. Kate has stated that she considers this to be her ninth studio album. The album is released on CD, 3-disc Collector’s edition, double vinyl and download on iTunes with what is promising to be a beautifully presented package. We. Cannot. Wait.
  • This same date, Monday 16th May, also sees the re-release on Kate’s Fish People label of The Dreaming, Hounds of Love, The Sensual World and The Red Shoes on CD after a considerable absence from many shop shelves. (We’ve also seen an Aerial re-release listed but we need to confirm that one). We definitely know that The Red Shoes will be a new re-mastered version (as included with the 3-disc edition of Director’s Cut.)
  • Tuesday 17th May sees the first portion of Mark Radcliffe’s chat with Kate air on BBC Radio 2 at 11pm.
  • Monday 23rd May – Friday 27th May is “Kate Bush Week” on the BBC 6Music radio station. A radio documentary on Kate will air on the night of Monday May 23rd. Each day of this week from 2.30pm to 3pm 6Music will play a section of Mark Radcliffe’s interview with Kate along with songs from Director’s Cut.

New interview with Kate in Friday’s The Irish Times

The TicketAre you managing to keep up with all this activity? We’re trying to! Kate has been interviewed by Sinead Gleeson for The Irish Times (Sinead has tweeted that Kate was “a brilliant, generous, funny interviewee.”) The interview will be published this coming Friday 6th May in The Ticket section of the newspaper, a week before the album is released in Ireland on May 13th. Some of you may remember Sinead’s rather wonderful review of the Aerial album in 2005, which you can find here in our archives. Looking forward to this.

Mark RadcliffeOn Friday, Mark Radcliffe played ‘Deeper Understanding’ and said he was interviewing Kate today, Tuesday, for future broadcast (see update below) and that BBC 6music was having a Kate Bush week beginning 23rd May (and he said this was “quite right too”). New interview with Kate in the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag!

Welt am Sonntag logo

“I always got distracted” runs the headline of the new interview Kate did with Harald Peters in the German language newspaper Welt am Sonntag (the Sunday version of the popular Die Welt publication). The interview can be found here, and translated (loosely) into English by Google here. Nice, conversational tone to this one 🙂 UPDATE: Johan, on our site forum, has provided a better translation here. (thanks Johan)

Mathew Bell in the The Independent on Sunday Diary comments:

Kate Bush has given a rare interview to mark the release of her new album, Director’s Cut. But she managed to give so little away in yesterday’s Times that the piece ended up revealing more about the interviewer than the interviewee. Will Hodgkinson, brother of our columnist Tom, landed the scoop, but could only squeeze out a couple of lines about the album before she wound things up. Still, it made a good read, not least as we learnt how, aged 7, Will became spellbound by the kooky warbler

Director’s Cut – Seán’s first impressions…

Seán says: I was kindly invited by EMI Ireland to a playback of Director’s Cut in Dublin during the week. I know that the reviews of this album are going to be coming thick and fast soon, and so with that in mind I didn’t want to spoil things too much by posting a blow-by-blow review of the album on the main news page. Suffice to say I was thrilled by what I heard. This is a gorgeously rich musical experience that I can’t wait to spend a LOT of time with when it’s finally released next month. I have instead posted some of my initial impressions on a separate page here if you want to read them, but I know many of you are just holding out till May 16th so that you can enjoy your own experience with this new record.

Kate’s new film for Deeper Understanding out April 26th! Preview clip posted!

From the official Facebook page:

Kate’s made an extraordinary new short film starring Robbie Coltrane, Frances Barber and Noel Fielding, to accompany the release of her current single “Deeper Understanding”. The film will be available on Kate’s official Youtube page from Tuesday 26th April 2011 and available to download from all iTunes stores worldwide. To get things started and bring you Deeper Understanding we’ve posted a short clip on YouTube here.

From the press release:

“Deeper Understanding’s prescience of web-age alienation seems quite remarkable” – Mojo

Kate, is releasing her new album Director’s Cut on May 16, and has directed an amazing short film to accompany the release of the current single “Deeper Understanding”. The film stars Robbie Coltrane as a successful businessman who is so obsessed by his computer that it leads to the break-up of his family (Frances Barber plays his wife) and, ultimately, his demise.

Scenes from Kate's new film

[Click on the film strip above for a larger image]

In an extraordinary sequence of shots, Coltrane is taken over by the spirit of the computer (played by Albert Bush, Kate’s son) , is reborn and seeks to exact revenge on the spirit, tracking it over London to a room inhabited by Noel Fielding.  Revenge is absolute, resulting in the death of Fielding’s character…and a surprising ending.

The film was conceived and directed by Kate and produced by Michael Solinger. It was shot over 5 days in London. The amazing visual effects were worked on by Ben Perrot of Destroy All Monsters and Matthias Lindahl from Fido.

“Deeper Understanding” first released in 1989 is perhaps even more relevant today as technology and computers begin to dominate our lives and leave us with little time to dream as technology and computers play an increasingly dominant role in our lives.

Kate hints at return to live stage in MOJO interview

From a Press Association report on the MOJO interview:

But in a new interview with Mojo magazine to mark her comeback, the 52-year-old put her years of silence on the touring circuit down to the sheer exertion of the ordeal.

“It was enormously enjoyable. But physically it was absolutely exhausting,” she said.

“I still don’t give up hope completely that I’ll be able to do some live work, but it’s certainly not in the picture at the moment because I just don’t quite know how that would work with how my life is now,” said Bush, who has largely withdrawn from public life to bring up her son Bertie, 12. “Maybe I will do some shows some day. I’d like to think so before I get too ancient – turn up with me Zimmer frame.”

She continued: “I enjoy singing but with the albums it’s the whole process I find so interesting. If I was going to do some shows it would be the same thing. Let’s just see, shall we?” More about MOJO Magazine here.

Q Magazine review Director’s Cut: “Succeeds….by thrusting some of her most powerful songs back into the limelight.”

The June issue of Q Magazine (out in May) features a four-star review of Director’s Cut by Paul Moody.

“…even for this most unpredictable of artists, the follow-up to 2005’s Aerial is a creative curveball. A reworking of 11 tracks from 1989’s The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, each with a brand new vocal, it seems a curious move for an artist who has made a virtue of never looking back (her solitary greatest hits album, The Whole Story, was released in 1986). Director’s Cut succeeds, however, by axing the star cameos (The Red Shoes originally included contributions from Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Nigel Kennedy) and thrusting some of her most powerful songs back into the spotlight.” (thanks to Louise and Menju56 on our forum)
