RIP Gow Hunter 1960-2011

Gow Hunter

Sad news this evening. The striking-looking actor and dancer featured in Kate’s 1986 video for her Hounds of Love single, Gow Hunter, has passed away yesterday at the age of just 51. A choreographer and dancer,  Gow had been living in Tokyo since 2007 and recently published several photography books.

UPDATE 2012: Kate posted on her official site about Gow and details of a charity sponsored walk in his memory:

Sponsored Walk – In Gow Hunter’s Memory – Earlier this month Karen Stripp took part in a sponsored walk to raise money for the Hampstead Marie Curie Hospice in memory of Gow Hunter. Although Karen has now completed the walk she is still accepting donations on her Just Giving Page available here. All proceeds will be donated to the Marie Curie Cancer Charity. In light of such a worthy cause and in memory of such a wonderful person Kate also wanted to add…

I’m so very sad to hear the news about Gow. He was a lovely man and such fun to work with as the male star in the video for “Hounds Of Love”. He really had the face of a great film star. He was just brilliant. Congratulations to Karen on the success of her walk and wishing her every success in raising funds. It’s such a lovely thing to do. Best wishes, Kate

Kate Bush 2012

From his official biography: “Trained in classical ballet Gow danced with various ballet companies and continued with diverse and challenging work in Television, Video, Film, Theatre and Opera. He has been very fortunate to live and work in many different countries….Paris, Rome, Geneva, Seoul, London to name a few and work with very talented performers/directors such as Kate Bush, Placido Domingo, David Bailey and Robert Lepage. After a successful career as a professional dancer Gow was accepted into Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design where he completed a B.A (Hons) degree in Textile Design. His designs have been seen on the catwalks of London Fashion week, solo exhibitions and his own label of knitted textile accessories. Gow has always had a passion for anything creative and photography has always been one of his most inspiring pastimes. Gow lives in Tokyo since 2007 and spends much of his time taking pictures of Japan and is beginning to fulfill his lifetime passion of photography.”

Sending our sincere thoughts and condolences to his loved ones.

In the video below, you can enjoy again Gow’s beautiful performance as the wrongly accused man in Kate’s Hitchcock-inspired promotional film for Hounds of Love. It is hard to imagine anyone more perfect in this role. Stunning.

Director’s Cut promotional activity update, PLUS vinyl release delayed by one week

Kate Bush - 2011Some excellent news for the week of release of Directors Cut. BBC Radio 2 have added the album to their B List, which starts this coming Saturday, following it being album of the week this week (hence all these track premiers we’ve been enjoying!) BBC 6 Music will have Director’s Cut as the album of the day on 20th May, with a track played on every show. National commercial station Smooth FM have it as album of the week next week, at least two tracks played each day, lunchtime and evening shows.

Vinyl version of Director’s Cut delayed by one week – out Monday 23rd May

Director's Cut - vinyl edition

The double vinyl version of Director’s Cut will not be released on the same day as the two different CD versions, we have officially been told. It will now be released one week later on Monday 23rd May. This applies to in-store copies and those ordered on-line. We suspect that this will apply to all territories. So, please don’t panic when it doesn’t arrive on Monday. We know the sumptuous large-format artwork will make this extra wait well worth it.

Kate’s new film for Deeper Understanding out April 26th! Preview clip posted!

From the official Facebook page:

Kate’s made an extraordinary new short film starring Robbie Coltrane, Frances Barber and Noel Fielding, to accompany the release of her current single “Deeper Understanding”. The film will be available on Kate’s official Youtube page from Tuesday 26th April 2011 and available to download from all iTunes stores worldwide. To get things started and bring you Deeper Understanding we’ve posted a short clip on YouTube here.

From the press release:

“Deeper Understanding’s prescience of web-age alienation seems quite remarkable” – Mojo

Kate, is releasing her new album Director’s Cut on May 16, and has directed an amazing short film to accompany the release of the current single “Deeper Understanding”. The film stars Robbie Coltrane as a successful businessman who is so obsessed by his computer that it leads to the break-up of his family (Frances Barber plays his wife) and, ultimately, his demise.

Scenes from Kate's new film

[Click on the film strip above for a larger image]

In an extraordinary sequence of shots, Coltrane is taken over by the spirit of the computer (played by Albert Bush, Kate’s son) , is reborn and seeks to exact revenge on the spirit, tracking it over London to a room inhabited by Noel Fielding.  Revenge is absolute, resulting in the death of Fielding’s character…and a surprising ending.

The film was conceived and directed by Kate and produced by Michael Solinger. It was shot over 5 days in London. The amazing visual effects were worked on by Ben Perrot of Destroy All Monsters and Matthias Lindahl from Fido.

“Deeper Understanding” first released in 1989 is perhaps even more relevant today as technology and computers begin to dominate our lives and leave us with little time to dream as technology and computers play an increasingly dominant role in our lives.

Tracklisting announced! Short film coming! Kate talks about the upcoming album!

From the press release:

KATE BUSH RELEASES HER BRAND NEW SINGLE “DEEPER UNDERSTANDING” ON TUESDAY APRIL 5; THE SINGLE WAS PLAYED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON RADIO 2 THIS MORNING, MONDAY APRIL 4.

KATE’S NEW ALBUM “DIRECTOR’S CUT” IS RELEASED ON MAY 16 AND FEATURES RE-INTERPRETATIONS AND MANY NEWLY RECORDED ELEMENTS OF CLASSIC KATE BUSH SONGS FROM TWO PREVIOUS ALBUMS.

Kate Bush releases her new single, a brand new version of “Deeper Understanding”, on Tuesday April 5. The single is released digitally and had its first play this morning, Monday April 4 on Radio 2. A new short film to accompany the track will be premiered in a few weeks. It’s directed by Kate and stars Robbie Coltrane, Frances Barber and Noel Fielding – and Kate’s son Albert plays the role of the computer programme. He is also featured in the song, singing as the computer programme.

Kate’s new album “Director’s Cut” is released on May 16, the first album to be released on her own label, Fish People, which will be distributed by EMI. The track-listing for the album, which sees her revisit and, in some cases, re-record tracks from two of her classic albums is:

  1. FLOWER OF THE MOUNTAIN (a new version of the song originally titled ‘The Sensual World’)
  2. SONG OF SOLOMON
  3. DEEPER UNDERSTANDING
  4. LILY
  5. THE RED SHOES
  6. THIS WOMAN’S WORK
  7. MOMENTS OF PLEASURE
  8. NEVER BE MINE
  9. TOP OF THE CITY
  10. AND SO IS LOVE
  11. RUBBERBAND GIRL

Kate says: “Originally when I wrote the song ‘The Sensual World’ I had used text from the end of ‘Ulysses’ by James Joyce, put to a piece of music I had written. When I asked for permission to use the text I was refused, which was disappointing. I then wrote my own lyrics for the song although I felt that the original idea had been more interesting.  Well, I’m not James Joyce am I? When I came to work on this project I thought I would ask for permission again and this time they said yes.   It is now re-titled ‘Flower Of the Mountain’ and I am delighted that I have had the chance to fulfill the original concept”.

All the lead vocals and drums on “Director’s Cut” are new performances, some of the tracks featuring guests including Steve Gadd, Danny Thompson and, on backing vocals, Mica Paris.  Three songs have been completely re-recorded, one of which is “This Woman’s Work”.

Kate adds: “For some time I have felt that I wanted to revisit tracks from these two albums and that they could benefit from having new life breathed into them. Lots of work had gone into the two original albums and now these songs have another layer of work woven into their fabric. I think of this as a new album”.

Kate Bush is currently working on her new album of brand new material.
